Republican Senators Propose Law Against Undocumented Driver’s Licenses

A group of Republican senators is trying to block states from granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.

The project called “Stop the Green Light for Undocumented Driver’s Licenses” seeks that states that license undocumented immigrants and with sanctuary laws do not receive certain federal funds.

The legislation was introduced by Marsha Blackburn (TN), Tom Cotton (Ark.), Kevin Cramer (ND), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), Kelly Loeffler (Ga.) Joni Ernst (Iowa) and Mike Rounds (RS.D. ).

“While Tennessee and many other states prohibit driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, a growing number of states are moving in the opposite direction and unleashing dangerous open border policies,” Senator Blackburn said in a statement. Immigrants must go through the proper federal process and obtain citizenship or legal status before obtaining a state driver’s license. In the United States, no one is above the law. ”

There should be consequences for sanctuary states that issue driver licenses to illegal aliens or that defy federal immigration law. My bill will cut off federal funds to lawless sanctuary jurisdictions harboring criminal aliens and terrorists.

The legislator used the death of a man in a collision in December 2018 as a reference. The other driver was identified as an undocumented immigrant, who was deported after being charged with negligent homicide.

The funds that the pro-immigrant states would lose correspond to programs for law enforcement and criminal justice.
