White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and other administration advisers plan to install 24-hour webcams on the southern US border to broadcast the wall’s construction live , the Washington Post reported.

Citing four people familiar with the White House proposal, the newspaper reported that Trump’s son-in-law and adviser raised the idea at a meeting in July.

The proposal seeks to gain public support as part of an effort to combat criticism that Trump had breached his 2016 campaign promise to build a wall, the newspaper reported.

“There will be a camera on the wall and it will be launched early next year,” a senior White House official involved in the initiative told the newspaper.

The news comes after construction began on the first new miles of wall along the U.S.-Mexico border last month since Trump took office.

Kushner has long been involved in border deliberations, attending meetings with Trump and potential contractors at the White House earlier this year.

Details and costs of the webcam project remain unclear , although a person involved in the discussions told The Washington Post that Customs and Border Protection has funds for border mapping and planning that could go towards the initiative. .

According to the newspaper, the idea for the webcams came despite rejection by the US Army Corps of Engineers and senior Customs and Border Protection officials.

Officials from both agencies were concerned that US task forces could be seen violating border jurisdiction when venturing into southern Mexico while transporting vehicles or equipment.

The cameras would also need their own internet connection and operators to keep them aimed at construction activity.

The live broadcasts would be part of a website focused solely on the progress of the border wall to vigorously announce the project , an official told the Washington Post.
